Jeremy Neale is (in his words) "back with a fresh new attitude and an even fresher new song called 'The News'."
After the release of his EP "In Stranger Times" (find our chat to him from last year here), Jeremy has been occupied with recording, releasing and touring new music with Velociraptor and Teen Sensations.
'The News'; produced, recorded and mixed by Tony Buchen at Studios 301, Sydney, is a track which I find will be sure to grow on listeners. With the synth, electric 80s vibe and of course Jeremy’s distinct vocals, this track is the perfect addition to your summer playlist (if you like good music and want to dance/feel cool/take a trip to the 80s).
We asked Jeremy a few questions about the new track, his inspirations, and his picks for the Hottest 100 for 2014 for when voting time comes around. (You should probably start making shortlists people it's a hard task to pick only 10 tracks)!
"The News" is quite a different sound from previous tracks on the "In Stranger Times" EP. What inspired you to write this synth 80s track?
I think I find it very hard to sit still stylistically. I get to a “been there, done that” kind of stage too quickly probably and always want to try something new. I did have a few songs sitting on standby prior to the decision to release and record “The News" that I felt were really good but they were in the same style as the last EP and I wanted to move on. Who knows, I might go back to the 60s revivalist thing at some point but for now I really wanted to explore some new territory. I think wherever I move stylistically though I’m still drawn to the same kinds of elements in music. Generally quite hooky and upbeat pop. Something that is at least somewhat danceable. I wrote “The News” around Christmas of last year though so I’ve been sitting on it for awhile. I get ahead of myself with song writing sometimes and have to wait ages to release the next wave of stuff. As for the 80s sound in particular I’ve always been a fan of the music of that decade. Phil Collins, Prince, Spandau Ballet, Duran Duran, The Cure etc. All the mainstays and the production techniques of the time.
How would you describe your own sound, as opposed to Velociraptor and Teen Sensations? How do you find the time for all three?
I feel my own sound is evolving a lot and given my tendency to want to try new stuff all the time I’d rather be known as somebody who constantly explores new realms of pop whereas Velociraptor will generally stay under the banner of different areas of garage / Ramones-ish punk pop and Teen Sensations will run our trajectory of whatever we feel The Beach Boys could have gotten away with at the different stages of their career.
Any ideas on what you'll be picking for Triple J's Hottest 100 for 2014?
I haven’t thought too hard about it yet so I’ll need the full list to jog my memory but definitely Andy Bull’s “Talk Too Much”, Foxygen’s “How Can You Really?”, Dorsal Fins’ “Monday / Tuesday”, Babaganouj’s “Too Late For Love” and Megan Washington’s “My Heart Is A Wheel”.
