Everyone has a certain someone that they look up to, that special person who inspires you. Maybe it's your Mum or your sibling, a celebrity; whoever it is they give you the inspiration and drive to become the person you want to be.

Recently I was lucky enough to get the opportunity to interview one of my biggest inspirations, my all time favorite Australian designer Jodie McKenzie. Jodie is one of the head designers of the fashion label Evil Twin, a well known brand stocked all over the world.

Q&A with Jodie McKenzie

Where did you come up with the name Evil Twin?

It was my nickname in high school, I'm a twin and was a little less behaved than my sister.

What's your ultimate go to outfit?

Black skinny jeans, black printed tee, black leather biker jacket, black boots, and a stack of silver jewelry - never fails!

Where do you get your inspiration when creating new collections?

There are two of us so it can different each time. Sometimes it's a vintage garment found on an overseas trip, other times we pin a bunch of random images we have collected to the wall, see what the general vibe is and go from there.

What's your favorite item of clothing/accessory you are wearing at the moment?

A thrashed up punk tee I stole from the boyfriend.

What inspired you to create your own fashion label?

Growing up my sister and I always found it hard to find fashion meets street kind of clothes that didn't cost hundreds of dollars. I decided there had to be other girls wanting the same thing and we went from there.

What advice can you give to anyone wanting to get into the fashion industry?

It's such a cliché but it pretty much boils down to hard work, a thick skin and determination. Despite outside appearances, the fashion industry can be unglamorous. There are a lot of long hours and people can be quite critical of your work. The upside is that the rewards definitely outweigh all that stuff. Nothing beats seeing your idea come to life and seeing someone wearing what started as a scribble in a sketchbook. Be passionate about what you do and you'll always enjoy the work.

Since recently moving to Sydney and making opportunities for myself I will tell you all never give up, work hard for what you want and make it happen for yourself! Don’t just sit around dreaming make those dreams reality!
