This reductive relief print by Samantha Page is titled “Woman in Water”. It is influenced by ukiyo-e printmaking techniques, it is also being influenced by contemporary printmaking techniques. The concept for this piece came about the night before the first phase was due after hours of procrastination, Emily Dickinson poems, and a familiar playlist blaring out of the artist’s speakers. As the artist was procrastinating, she decided that she wanted the art piece to convey juxtaposing concepts, such as comfort and uneasiness.
Comfort is conveyed through the smooth lines that are meant to remind the audience of the smoothness of skin, rocks, and bodies of water; the smoothness of nature’s serenity. Uneasiness is felt due to the woman being headless, the lack of a head suggests that the woman is worry free and feels complete serenity in nature.
These concepts are the only concepts that the artist wishes to give to the audience because she feels that these concepts are substantial enough to guide the audience in the intended direction of the piece, the rest of the interpretation is up to the audience. The audience is free to form their own interpretations as the artist believes that undirected thought is important in discovering ones self.
Listen to the playlist the artist was listening to:
